Plan the parents and separate unintended pairs
Choose a stallion and mare for the offspring you want, and keep unintended breeding pairs apart wherever your housing layout allows because shared housing can lead to accidental pregnancies, including boarded horses. Plan for eight in-game days of pregnancy and four additional days for the foal to reach the yearling stage.
Breeding methods, facilities and space
The full game includes covering and artificial insemination, as well as a breeding station. Advanced building upgrades eventually unlock a laboratory that previews possible foals and lets you offer more stud services. Work toward that preview feature if you want help comparing potential pairings.
Make room for a growing herd before expanding your breeding plans. Building upgrades provide space for more horses, while staff can help with care and training as your yard grows. Leave room in your budget for those ongoing needs alongside your next facility upgrade.
Prepare a deliberate pairing
- Choose your breeding goal before selecting parents. Decide whether appearance, performance or a preferred combination matters most to you, so you have a clear reason for choosing the pairing.
- Compare the proposed mare and stallion. Foals inherit a mix of their parents' coloring, white patterns and personality traits, so consider what each parent contributes rather than choosing only for a favorite coat.
- Separate mares from stallions you do not intend them to breed with wherever the layout allows. Include boarded horses in this check, since accidental pregnancies have also involved horses boarding at the yard.
- Use the breeding laboratory's foal preview once you unlock it. Compare the possible offspring with your goal to help decide whether you want to proceed with that parent combination.
- Review the offspring before planning another pairing. Compare its inherited appearance and personality with what you wanted, then decide which qualities you would like to keep selecting for as your breeding line develops.
Follow pregnancy and foal growth
Pregnancy lasts eight in-game days, and the foal reaches the yearling stage four additional days after birth. Horse ages are measured in in-game days, or turns, rather than years or months. Read the age display with that timescale in mind when following your young horses.
Take a nursing mare out using Going on a Walk in the arena or forest. Her foal can accompany her, giving you an activity to enjoy with them together. This is a useful option when you want to spend time with the mare and foal during the nursing stage.
Select for appearance, personality and performance
For an appearance-focused pairing, compare the parents' coloring and white patterns together. Foals inherit a mixture of those features, so think about the combination you want to develop. When the laboratory becomes available, use its possible-foal preview to help assess your proposed pairing.
Personality is another consideration alongside looks and performance. Traits can affect how quickly horses get dirty, their tendency toward injuries, and whether they sometimes change gait independently even at full confidence. Consider the kind of horse you enjoy caring for and training when choosing parents.
If your performance goal includes Direct Descendant, preserve your starter horse's bloodline: that achievement requires a 100/100 foal descended from your starter horse. Keep suitable descendants available while working toward it, rather than selling or retiring the entire line before reaching your goal.
Avoid boarder pregnancies and stallion conflicts
Check boarded mares whenever you review shared housing. The Oops! achievement is awarded for accidentally breeding a boarder mare, so ownership does not remove the need to consider a horse in your separation plan. Review the whole group whenever you change its occupants.
Consider stallion conflicts when planning those groups as well. The boys are fighting achievement involves two stallions fighting over a mare. Avoid putting rival stallions together around a mare if your goal is a controlled breeding setup.
Continue from the right demo save
If you are returning from a demo, check which demo created your save before planning a breeding line around it. February and October saves have different compatibility with the full game.
| Edition | What it means for your breeding plans |
|---|---|
| February demo | Includes breeding within 25 in-game rounds, but its saves do not transfer to the full game. |
| October demo | Limited to 25 in-game days, with rebalanced lower-stat starter horses. Its saves transfer to the full game. |
| Full release — November 4, 2026 | Has no day limit, allowing you to continue developing your yard and breeding lines beyond the demo. |
